Advocacy
Effective December 9, 2024, and for the first time in history, Florida credit unions are officially able to apply to take public deposits. This monumental win comes after years of credit union advocacy and opens up billions of dollars in public funds for credit unions.
Compliance
The CFPB finalized a rule capping overdraft fees at $5 for large banks and credit unions, effective October 1, 2025. Financial institutions can either comply with the cap, charge fees that only cover costs and losses, or offer profit-generating overdraft loans if they meet lending law requirements, including disclosing interest rates. Banking industry groups have filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn it and anticipate several additional challenges to the rule in the next Congress.
Foundation
The Foundation invites affiliated credit unions to apply for the Disaster Preparedness RecoveryPro Grant Program by the extended deadline of January 15, 2025. This program provides access to the RecoveryPro platform and includes a three-day training workshop to help credit unions develop and sustain effective business continuity plans.
