Political Action Committees

Political Action Committees (PACs) are utilized by The League to raise and allocate funds strategically to support candidates and policies that protect and promote the interests of credit unions and their members.

Why do credit unions need PACs?

State and federal lawmakers make decisions daily that could potentially affect credit unions. Other financial institutions, with interests very different from credit unions, actively lobby, campaign for, and contribute to candidates favorable to their cause.

The Advocacy Fund

Due to campaign finance laws that prohibit federally chartered credit unions from giving to state PACs, The League has developed The Advocacy Fund as a way for federally chartered credit unions to contribute to our collaborative advocacy efforts. This dedicated fund is used to develop targeted media and PR campaigns, issue-specific advocacy, credit union educational content, and more.

What is the difference between The League’s State PACs, Advocacy Fund, and FedPAC?

  • Can only accept personal contributions from individuals.
  • Supports federal candidates (United States Senate, Congress, etc.).

  • Cannot accept contributions from federally-chartered credit unions.
  • Can accept corporate contributions from credit unions or individuals.
  • Support state and local candidates (Governor, State Representatives, etc.).

  • Can accept contributions from state or federally-chartered credit unions.
  • Supports issue-specific initiatives and related advocacy efforts.
Contributions to the state or federal PACs are not tax deductible. Contributions are strictly voluntary, and you have the right to refuse to contribute without reprisal. Contributions from individuals outside of the solicitable class will be returned. Federal election law requires us to report the name, address, occupation, and/or name of the employer for individuals who contribute $200 or more in a calendar year.

If you have any questions, please contact Josie Ellis or Ibby Dickson.
